The online Master of Science in Engineering in Software Systems and Cybersecurity (MSE-SSC Online) program extends Penn Engineering’s legacy of excellence into the systems and security domains, defining our digital future. This degree prepares engineers to protect what matters—from critical infrastructure to everyday devices—combining modern rigor with mission-driven impact.
You’ll learn from Ivy League faculty who are not only world-class engineers, but also exceptional educators. Our collaborative environment connects software and security engineers across disciplines to solve problems that shape our shared future.
In a world where AI can write code but can’t design secure systems, MSE-SSC Online graduates will play a vital role — leading with the judgment and technical depth that define the next chapter of engineering.
Admission to the MSE-SSC Online program is very competitive. We look for applicants who are likely to succeed in, benefit from, and contribute to the program. For tips on how to strengthen your application, read our Admissions Advice articles.
In addition to the online application, you’ll need to submit a personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a resume. If you are an international applicant or a non-U.S. citizen/permanent resident for whom English is not their first language, you will also need to submit official English Language Proficiency scores (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo).
For details, see the MSE-SSC Admissions page.
MSE-SSC Online is a new program so official graduate outcomes data is not available at this time. Please refer to the Penn Engineering’s official Career Outcomes report to review career outcomes of Penn Engineering students in adjacent on-campus engineering master’s degree programs.
Yes, these are asynchronous, remote programs with no required log in sessions.
A Penn Engineering Online degree program requires the successful completion of ten courses. Students have access to a Student Success Advising Team that can help them plan their course schedule and overall degree plan. Students can easily switch between part-time and full-time registration each semester based on how many courses they take. Enrollment in the summer semester is optional. We encourage all students to meet with a member of our Student Success Advising Team to discuss the course load and route to degree completion that best fits their needs. Depending on how many classes you take each semester, you can complete the program in 16 to 40 months.

Tuition and fees are based on the number of courses you are taking per semester. For details about costs, see our Tuition & Financing page.
