MSE-TI

Admission to the MSE-TI Online program is very competitive. We look for applicants who are likely to succeed in, benefit from, and contribute to the program. For tips on how to strengthen your application, read our Admissions Advice articles.

In addition to the online application, you’ll need to submit a personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a resume, along with offical English Language Proficiency scores (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo) if you’re an international applicant or a non-U.S. citizen/permanent resident for whom English is not their first language. No, the program is 100 percent online. That said, one of our optional Open Elective courses, DATO 5990 Practicum, includes a one-week on-campus intensive component. Additionally, there are some optional Penn Engineering Online events that are hosted in person that students may attend, like Homecoming or Graduation.

No, the MSE-TI program does not require a thesis

It’s possible to go on to a PhD program after earning your MSE-TI degree, but you would likely need to supplement your studies with research to be prepared for a PhD program.

MSE-TI Online is a new program so the outcomes data is not available at this time. Please refer to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Career Outcomes report.

Depending on your eligibility and completed coursework you may be able to enter into the MSE-TI Online program if you have been accepted into another Master of Engineering Online program. For more information see the Change of Degree section of the student handbook.

The MSE-TI Online program offers concentrations in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Software Systems & Cybersecurity. Choosing a concentration is mandatory for this degree program, and will be reflected on your transcript upon graduation

When submitting your application, you will be asked to indicate via rank choice which concentration you would like to pursue as part of the MSE-TI degree.

Yes, you are required to choose a concentration for the MSE-TI degree program. You must make this choice as part of the application process.

Yes. Students who wish to pursue coursework spanning two Advanced Technical Concentrations may do so by using their free elective courses, provided all degree requirements are met. Such plans should be developed in consultation with an academic advisor to ensure appropriate depth and coherence. Courses may be applied toward either core or one Advanced Technical Concentration and may not be double-counted to satisfy core and multiple concentration requirements simultaneously.

Concentrations are earned as a part of your MSE-TI degree. Certificates and dual degrees can only be completed post-grad.

Your choice of concentration will not affect your application.

Yes, your concentration will be reflected on your transcript.
