Penn Engineering Launches New Online Master’s Degree in Technology and Innovation
PHILADELPHIA, PA — [July 13, 2026]
New MSE-TI Online program prepares engineers to expand beyond technical execution into product leadership, applied innovation and cross-functional technology development.
The University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science (Penn Engineering) today announced the launch of the new online Master of Science in Engineering in Technology and Innovation (MSE-TI Online), a graduate degree designed for engineers and other technical professionals seeking to deepen their expertise while expanding their ability to define, build and lead technology-driven products and systems across organizations and industries.
Launching in Spring 2027 and currently accepting applications, the fully online program is designed for those who want to remain deeply technical while broadening their ability to operate across engineering, product, communication and organizational contexts.
Expanding What Engineers Can Do
“Many engineers reach a point in their careers where technical expertise alone isn’t the challenge,” says Jeffrey Babin, MSE-TI Online Program Director, Practice Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, Associate Director of Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Engineering Faculty Director of Venture Lab.
“The challenge is understanding how to translate that expertise into products, decisions, and outcomes that create value. MSE-TI was designed to help engineers expand their impact while remaining deeply grounded in engineering.”
Unlike traditional technical master’s degrees, the MSE-TI degree combines advanced engineering study with coursework in entrepreneurship, product development, engineering economics, intellectual property, and technology ethics. The curriculum will help engineers navigate both the technical and organizational dimensions of technology development.
A Flexible Curriculum with Multiple Paths
The MSE-TI Online curriculum combines four core courses in technology innovation and professional practice with advanced technical concentrations in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or Software Systems & Cybersecurity.
The program’s flexible structure allows students to pair technical specialization with interdisciplinary coursework that reflects how technology is developed, evaluated, deployed, and managed within organizations.
Through the combination of core courses, technical concentrations and electives, students gain both advanced engineering knowledge and a broader understanding of the economic, legal, organizational and human factors that influence technological success.
Preparing Engineers for Expanded Technical Leadership
Graduates will be ready to operate at the intersection of engineering, product and technology leadership, helping define what gets built, guiding technology initiatives, leading cross-functional teams and translating technical expertise into products, systems and solutions that create meaningful impact.
Career pathways may include technical product leadership, innovation engineering, systems and product engineering, technical program management, applied research and development, and engineering-focused entrepreneurship.

The MSE-TI degree builds on more than 25 years of Penn Engineering’s history of engineering entrepreneurship education, combining rigorous technical training with insights from faculty, practitioners, entrepreneurs and technology leaders who have helped bring new technologies from concept to impact.
