Meet Jean, Penn Engineering’s AI Tutor — Available 24/7
Penn Engineering Online is pleased to introduce “Jean”, an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist Penn Engineering Online students. Jean offers instant, reliable answers by referencing Penn’s private course materials and discussion board data – information that commercial chatbots don’t have access to. The 24/7 availability of Jean helps online graduate students in different time zones stay on track and receive immediate feedback and guidance.
“Jean combines the best of AI-driven automation with the human touch of expert instructors,” explains Chris Callison-Burch, Professor in Computer and Information Science and Director of the online Master of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence (MSE-AI Online) degree program.
The chatbot was named after Jean Bartik, a pioneering ENIAC programmer, and is praised for its precision and educational value. Built specifically for Penn Engineering’s online environment, Jean improves learning by guiding students through problems without doing the work for them, much like a personal tutor. As an AI tool, Jean helps scale the benefits of one-on-one tutoring, promoting deeper understanding while aligning with Penn Engineering’s academic integrity policies. Students say Jean has enhanced their learning efficiency and is preparing them for a tech-driven future.
