Road Trip: Boston Edition
Penn Engineering Online is committed to meeting students where they are — both figuratively and literally.
Their online master’s degree programs are designed to be flexible and accessible, inviting graduate students around the globe into the world of Penn Engineering. From anywhere in the world, students can access the University of Pennsylvania’s renowned engineering faculty through an engaging learning experience that features rigorous, Ivy League courses.
But beyond meeting students digitally through asynchronous online academics — the Penn Engineering Online team also travels to meet with students face-to-face, in real-time, in cities around the world. The Road Trip program was designed to provide online graduate students in Penn Engineering Online degree programs with in-person programming to support their personal and professional development.
Road Trips bring Penn Engineering Online team members to cities where enrolled students live and work, to host site visits at prominent companies in those regions. These trips not only give students access to potential employers, but they also allow students to get to know classmates in-person through informal social networking events. In recent years, the Penn Engineering Online team has hosted Road Trips to connect with students in cities such as Seattle, New York, Vancouver, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
Last week, members of the Penn Engineering Online staff traveled up the East Coast to Boston, MA to host the second Road Trip of the 2024. Online graduate students were invited to join two full days of Road Trip events, including site visits at four Boston-area employers.
Tripadvisor
Students connected with members of the Tripadvisor recruiting team to learn more about the office culture and recommendations for applying for technical roles. Attendees also participated in conversations with current employees and toured the facilities.
MathWorks
Students met with MathWorks recruiters to learn more about the organization and how to stand out in the talent pool. Current employees shared industry advice and career journey insights.
Cambridge Innovation Center
Students visited the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) to learn about the Boston startup scene. Attendees participated in a tour of the CIC workspace and heard from a panel featuring Penn Engineering alumni and students immersed in Boston’s vibrant tech startup community.
Formlabs
Students toured the facilities and met Formlabs recruiters who shared best practices for job applicants. Participants also met a panel of current employees, who gave a glimpse into the Formlabs office culture, offered industry advice and shared their own career journeys.
In addition to getting exposure to these four organizations, Road Trip attendees were able to foster their network of personal and professional connections — not just with representatives from each company but also with their own classmates. Participants were invited to gather with fellow students and local Boston-area alumni for conversation and camaraderie during a dedicated social networking event.
The team at Penn Engineering Online appreciates all of the students who joined them on the road in Boston and all of the employers who opened their doors. Look out for the next Road Trip, coming soon to a city near you!
